Advantages of Mathematics

Many of us wondered about the advantages of Mathematics during our childhood days. Many of us were not able to comprehend the benefits of mathematics beyond the daily usage of calculating simple numbers. Let us see in detail what are some of the benefits of learning mathematics and marveling at this arduous subject at early age.

The importance of mathematics is two-fold, it is important in the advancement of science and two, it is important in our understanding of the workings of the universe. And in here and now it is important to individuals for personal development, both mentally and in the workplace.

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.

One should also be aware of the wide importance of Mathematics, and the way in which it is advancing at a spectacular rate. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. When patterns are found, often in widely different areas of science and technology, the mathematics of these patterns can be used to explain and control natural happenings and situations. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the individual. Read the rest of this entry »

Learning Multiple Languages

Many people who learn a second language mistakenly believe that they can’t learn anymore languages beyond this. In fact the opposite is true – learning languages becomes easier.

The first language you learn – your mother tongue, or native language – is the hardest. You learn by trial and error for the first years of your life, and you learn out of necessity – a pretty good motivator. Some people are born into multiple language environments, but most learn additional languages by attending school or self-study later in life.

We assume that because of the time and effort required to learn a second language, we won’t really have the ability to learn more languages later. We learn languages differently later in life than we did as a child, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As we begin to study our second language, we begin to learn and sharpen a set of skills that we don’t use completely in the other aspects of our life. As we get better at our second language, those learning skills improve. The phrase I like is – “we can learn to learn languages.”

Which brings us to learning multiple languages. There are a few tricks to learning several languages, whether you are learning them at the same time, or one at a time in succession. Read the rest of this entry »

Consider These Home School Statistics

Numbers don’t lie, and a variety of home school information show the positive impact that teaching your kids at home can have. Let’s consider some of these numbers.

First, you should know that in 2007 (that last year we have for these numbers), approximately 1.5 million students were taught at their own homes. This was a 36 percent increase over the previous numbers in 2003. We can estimate that today, that number is approaching 2 million students.

Why such a startling increase? Although there are almost as many reasons as there are students, the most common reasons can also be determined by currently-available statistics. The Department of Education reports that 36 percent of students have parents who are concerned about giving their kids moral or religious instruction; 21 percent are concerned about peer pressure or drugs in public schools. About 17 percent said they were dissatisfied with the academic instruction available at public schools. And 7 percent of parents said they were interested in a nontraditional education method.

What’s more, it’s likely that the government is actually underestimating the number of home schooled children. This is because in many states, there is no requirement for the parents to report on their children’s progress. The official government numbers vary from year to year, but regularly show something like 2 or 3 percent involved in homeschooling. In reality, though, this number could easily be as high as 5 or even 6 percent. If it is this high, this is a mind-blowing number! Read the rest of this entry »
